Susan Ouriou and Christelle Morelli

Translators of Winter Child

Susan Ouriou is an award-winning writer and literary translator working mainly from French and Spanish into English. With her first translation, she was runner-up for the John Glassco Translation Award and has published over 20 book translations (and numerous stories and poems in anthologies) since that time as well as 15 co-translations with Christelle Morelli (including seven children’s books from English into French). She was short-listed for Canada’s Governor General’s Award for Literary Translation on three occasions (for The Road to Chlifa and Necessary Betrayals and for her co-translation with Christelle Morelli, Stolen Sisters) and was awarded the prize in 2009 for her translation Pieces of Me. IBBY’s annual Honour List has featured five of her children’s translations and in 2012, she received the insignia of Chevalier in France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for her work as a translator, interpreter and writer. Susan helped found the Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC), where she has served as a member of its advisory council, as a consulting translator and as its director. She has also worked as faculty translating and interpreting for The Banff Centre’s Aboriginal Emerging Writers (now Indigenous Writing) residency. She was the founding editor of the bi-annual translation review TransLit and is the editor and translator of the 2010 anthology Beyond Words – Translating the World and the 2014 anthology Languages of Our Land – Indigenous Poems and Stories from Quebec. She has published one adult novel Damselfish and a youth novel Nathan.

Christelle Morelli is a French-English literary translator and teacher in the Francophone school system. She has translated the anthology Languages of Our Land – Indigenous Poems and Stories from Quebec and the children’s book Blanche Hates the Night. She has also co-translated 15 fiction, non-fiction and children’s books with Susan Ouriou. Her French to English co-translations other than Winter Child are: Against God, Sand Bar, Jane, the Fox and Me, Millions for a Song, Once Upon a Rainy Day, Stolen Sisters, Louis Undercover and Hunting Houses. Her English to French co-translation titles are: La toute dernière première fois, Chin Chiang et la danse du dragon, Lune jaune, à bientôt, Le chandail d’Amos, Une musique du ciel, Leçons de la Mère-Terre and Un saumon pour Simon. Her co-translation with Susan Ouriou, Stolen Sisters, was short-listed for the Governor General’s Award for Translation in 2015
